Pine Stool

Another wood working project that is by well established convention wrong.

Construction grade pine is laminated into a single blank cube and then turned by hand. Under normal circumstances within a few seasons the piece would have pulled itself apart with changes in humidity and the release of natural tension.

To avoid catastrophic failure the entire piece is encapsulated in a shell of epoxy resin.

The epoxy layer is approximately 2mm thick throughout and also absorbs into the timber to give an extreme bond. The surface is then wet sanded to 8000 grit to give a glass like finish. Pine on its own would not sand beyond 240 grit due to its softness but with this applied coating it can go well beyond that. There is a crispness to the grain of this ordinary wood that is not usually visible.

Four sizes and numerous staining variations were produced and sold internationally.
