Cast iron adjustable table base
The brief was to design a cast iron table base for production in a relatively basic facility in India.
The first product I designed for Tom Dixon Ltd and still in production with an expanding range of related products (designed by others).
An adjustable tripod was formed from three identical cast iron plates, threaded through with a steel stud.
The system of repeated simple elements means tooling is extremely cost effective and wastage from quality issues is very low. Finishing the part is also very straightforward as there are almost no internal surfaces.
The table is sold and shipped as a kit of parts with interchangeable marble or timber tops, stud lengths and base diameters.
